Located in the town of Otofuke in Hokkaido and listed as a heritage site, the hot springs along the Tokachigawa River were known by the local Ainu people as ‘Kusuri no Yu’ meaning ‘Herbal/healing hot spring’.
Unlike other springs which come from volcanoes (giving them a distinct smell of sulfur), these are ‘Moor hot springs’ where the water is from ancient plants and organic matter from deep below the ground, heated by geothermal water. In winter the Tokachigawa River is home to beautiful swans so visitors can bathe in luxury while listening to the beautiful songs of these birds.
Relaxing in this healing hot bath surrounded by the crisp white snow is a great way to cure your body of any aches and pains from all the skiing and snowboarding.
